Located on the banks of the Potomac River and just ten miles from the center of Washington, D.C., lies McLean, Virginia. With a population of nearly 50,000, McLean is considered one of the best places to live in Fairfax County and the region. McLean offers its residents a quiet, suburban feel with plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, and parks that can be found nearby. The city of McLean is named for John Roll McLean, a publisher and owner of The Washington Post. In the early 1900s, McLean was involved in a business venture to build a trolley line to connect Georgetown (in the District) with Great Falls Park in Fairfax County. The trolley line became known as the Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad (GF&OD). The two stations were eventually named after the two owners of the GR&OD: McLean Station at Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) and Elkins Station at Old Georgetown Pike (Route 193). The development around the McLean Station eventually became the town of McLean, VA.

Today, homebuyers can find a wide range of housing stock in McLean including expansive estates, luxury single-family homes, historic properties, and new builds. Many homes feature luxury amenities and river views. As of January of 2021, the supply and demand of homes in McLean were about equal. Two McLean zip codes (22101 and 22102) consistently rank among the most expensive zip codes in the state of Virginia and the country. Data compiled by the US Census Bureau found that McLean was the third wealthiest city in the US in 2018.

Fairfax County Public Schools are considered to be some of the best in the state and graduates have the opportunity to attend nearby colleges and universities. Residents are also able to take advantage of many leisure activities; from breathtaking views of the Potomac River at Great Falls Park to live performances at nearby Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, recreational opportunities abound.

McLean sits along what is known as the Dulles Technology Corridor, a business cluster containing many defense and technology companies. Many national and international companies call this area home, including Capital One, Mars, Booz Allen Hamilton, Freddie Mac, Hilton Worldwide, DynCorp, and the Gannett Company. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has its headquarters in McLean.

Finally, McLean is conveniently located near many of the region’s major roadways, including the George Washington Memorial Parkway, the Capital Beltway, Interstate 66, the Dulles Access Road, Chain Bridge Road, and Georgetown Pike. The Silver Line of the Metro runs through McLean. Other nearby Metro stations include West Falls Church (Orange Line), East Falls Church (Silver and Orange Lines), and Tysons Corner (Silver Line). MetroBus and Fairfax Connector each have several bus routes traveling through McLean, including routes connecting downtown McLean with the McLean Metrorail station. There are also numerous biking and hiking trails in the area.
