Living In: National Landing

The community of the future is here—and it is located in Northern Virginia.

Located directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., National Landing is poised to become the DC metro region’s premier mixed-use urban community. Made up of three thriving neighborhoods—Crystal City, Pentagon City, and Potomac Yard—National Landing is defined by its dynamic blend of office space, diverse housing options, cultural attractions, indoor and outdoor recreation, and plentiful green space.

Though redevelopment of the area had been discussed earlier, the impetus for a cross-jurisdictional neighborhood that would become National Landing began in 2018 with the push to bring Amazon’s second U.S. headquarters to the Washington, D.C. area. Since Amazon’s formal announcement on November 13, 2018, confirming that its new headquarters would be located in Crystal City, citizens of nearby Alexandria and Arlington have proactively debated and approved growth plans that call for transit-oriented, walkable, mixed-use urban environments. The CEO of JBG Smith, the lead developer of National Landing, recently stated that they seek to create an “18-hour environment within National Landing, where people can walk from their home to their office, as well as their favorite restaurants and amenities.”

In addition to Amazon, National Landing is home to a thriving business community. Several of these small businesses, start-ups, and mission-driven organizations include March of Dimes, PBS, Conservation International, and the Consumer Technology Association. Many independent shops, cafés, and restaurants are located throughout the area to support local residents and businesses.

Numerous housing options are offered to homebuyers, including luxury condominiums and town homes. Single family homes offered include bungalow, Cape Cod, or brick colonial style. Sales and prices continue to remain strong in the zip codes that encompass National Landing. The Washington Post recently reported that “two years and a pandemic later, the housing market around Amazon’s second headquarters and National Landing remains heated.”

In addition to the dynamic blend of housing and office space, National Landing is home to many cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities. Its flourishing arts and culture scene includes the award-winning Synetic Theater. Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus is a magnet for leading tech talent, research, and education. For those seeking outdoor recreation, there is a well-established network of pedestrian and bicycle trails throughout the area. Just recently, a Capital Bikeshare station was installed at nearby Reagan National Airport, making it the first major metropolitan airport in the U.S. with a dock-based shared bike program.

Finally, National Landing is defined by its central and easily accessible location. It is one of the only urban neighborhoods in the world within walking distance to an airport—Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is just five minutes away by car, Metro, or bike, and as little as 15 minutes by foot. The yellow and blue Metrorail lines, Virginia Railway Express (VRE), and Metrobus routes provide transit throughout the county and adjacent jurisdictions. Private commuters enjoy easy access to major commuter routes, including Interstate 395, George Washington Parkway, and Routes 1 and 110.
